The South Western Counties Golf Association Seniors Amateur Championships were held at Filton Golf Club on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th July 2014, the two hottest days of the year so far, with temperatures registering 35 Centigrade at times during the event.
A full field of seventy-two competitors made up the field.
Scoring proved difficult with the dry conditions, and no competitor managed a sub- par round on either day of the tournament.
The South West Seniors Qualifier for the England Golf Seniors County Finals was a close, nail biting affair. Gloucestershire lead after the first day by three strokes from Cornwall, but, the Cornish team of Andy Clotworthy, Simon Harper, Alan Poole, Colin Ross and Captained by Mike Marshall, narrowed the gap to just one stroke to the eventual winners Gloucestershire scoring 768.
The winning team of Robert Broad, Nick Gore, William Higgins, Stuart Masson, David Potter and Richard Wood, captained by non-playing Captain Richard Boulding returned a team total of 767.
The winner of the Leonard Lake Trophy and the South West Seniors Amateur Champion for 2014, Mike Chapman from Dorset, however, returned excellent rounds of 73 + 71 for a total of 144, and a four stroke victory over the runner-up, Roger Searle with rounds of 71 + 77 = 148, representing Wiltshire.
The Age Group Championships were won by Grahame Sanford (Devon) with rounds of 78 + 79 = 157, for a two shots victory over the runner-up John Hindshaw (Stinchcombe Hill) with rounds of 80 + 79 and a total of 159.
The prize for the best Nett score in the age group category was awarded to Alexander Kidd (Somerset) 72 + 73, Total 145.
