The 2017 South Western Counties Seniors Championship

This years championship was played over the challenging Orchardleigh Golf Club set in the beautiful countryside of the Orchardleigh established parkland estate near the town of Frome in Somerset.

The course was designed by Brian Huggett and built during 1994. The 6,824 yard par 72 course is routed through mature trees with water coming into play on seven holes.

Day one gave some testing conditions with a blustery wind and frequent heavy and persistent showers. Only three players equalled the par of 72 strokes:-

Ron Schroder (Burnham & Berrow Golf Club), Simon Dymoke (The Wiltshire Golf & Country Club) and Veron Chappell (Cotswold Edge Golf Club).

Day two, the weather again provided difficult scoring conditions, with a blustery wind, heavy overcast skies and a threat of heavy rain in the air, although, thankfully this didn't happen until the final round was nearing completion.

The best score on day two was a 74 by Paul Vicary of Saunton Golf Club followed by Rob Stephens (Minchinhampton Golf Club) on 75.

The overall winner of the South Western Counties Golf Association Seniors Amateur Championship for 2017 was Ron Schroder (Burnham & Berrow - Somerset), pictured below,


with rounds of 72 + 77 = 149 recording a single stroke victory over:-

Rob Stephens (Minchinhampton Golf Club) 75 + 75 = 150

Tony Coles (Ashley Wood Golf Club) 74 + 76 = 150

Richard Jeffery (Salisbury & South Wilts Golf Club) 74 + 76 = 150

Vernon Chappell (CotswoldEdge Golf Club) 72 + 78 = 150

The Over 65's was won by Richard Jeffery (Salisbury & South Wilts) 150.

The best nett score prize went to Michael Wigley of Trevose Golf Club.

The England Golf Seniors Team qualifying event was won by GLOUCESTERSHIRE,

Their team of Robert Broad, Vernon Chappell, Michael Jarvis, David Potter, Rob Stephens and Richard Wood scoring a team total of 766 and a seven stroke winning margin over Runners-Up DORSET on 773.

3rd were WILTSHIRE on 776, 4th SOMERSET on 778, 5th CORNWALL on 781 and sixth DEVON a further shot in arrears on 782.
