The 2024 Seniors Amateur Championships took place at Kingdown GC which was presented to the players in tip top condition and proving to be a great challenge for the competitors.
The first round was played in good spirit and with a lot of putts coming up short there was not going to be many under par today. Defending Champion Simon Knowles made a great start to his defence with a fine one under par 71with 3 bogies and 4 birdies. Wiltshire's Mark Snape equalled the 71 to share the lead even with a triple on the sixth. Mike White had a good level par round, with Peter Bicknell, Bryan Lindsay & David law two further back on 74. Day two the business end of the competition where scoring is generally better which proved the case for some. Leaders Simon and Mark struggled to get going whilst others were doing well. Mark Blaber had a great 71 for a 147 total which was then followed by Ian Veale also 71 for a 147 total Dorset's Phil Bill had a putt on the eighteenth which just slipped by leaving him on 148. Mark Snape played his way out of contention but Simon Knowles battled his way in with a 76 to tie the lead on 147. So we had a playoff which after three holes saw Simon drop out leaving Ian and Mark to battle it out with Ian Veale coming out on top after the seventeenth extra hole to become the Senior Champion.
Congratulations to Ian on winning the Leonard Lake Trophy to become the
SWCGA Seniors Amateur Champion.

The South West Group Qualifying Competition for the England Golf Seniors County Finals to be played at Torquay Golf Club was in the main between last year's Champions Cornwall and the Home side Wiltshire. Dorset had another bad first day and even though they had a good second day they could only manage third place. Cornwall had a great second day to take the title for the second year finishing on +28 some 22 shots better than Wiltshire. We all wish them every success at Torquay in October.
